On March 17, 2009, Max-Planck-Institut für Physik cooperates with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität to participate in the International Particle Physics Masterclasses for students in Munich.
The International Particle Physics Masterclasses 2009 are fifth in an annual series of events, in which 80 institutes in 23 countries take part this year. The large popularity of the new particle accelerator LHC at CERN in Geneva led to a new record in participation numbers. In munich we expect 60 participants, worldwide over 6000 students take part. They will have the possibility to do their own research on how particles collide in an accelerator for a whole day. Beginning at 10 am, the students will listen to talks at the institutes and evaluate experimental data themselves, guided by scientists. The final event of the day will be an international video conference by the young scientists.
This year, 20 female and 45 male students from grades 11 through 13 from 13 schools in the larger Munich area were registered as participants.
