Max-Planck-Institut für Physik – Werner-Heisenberg-Institut
Experimental Physics Division – MAGIC Telescope Group

Dr. rer. nat., Dipl.-Phys. (Univ.)

Robert Marcus Wagner

Robert Wagner

Currently I am working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Max-Planck-Institut für Physik and hold a Junior-PI position of the DFG Excellence Cluster “Origin and Structure of the Universe”. I am a member of the MAGIC collaboration, which has built and operates the two largest imaging air Cerenkov telescopes world-wide, designed for the investigation of very high-energy gamma rays. The MAGIC telescopes are located at the European Northern Observatory atop 2,400-m Roque de los Muchachos on the Canary Island of La Palma. As an experimental particle physicist and astrophysicist by training, I am involved in data analysis and data interpretation for MAGIC, where my scientific interests focus on the physics of extragalactic gamma-ray sources, and in the construction and commissioning of the second MAGIC telescope. I am member of the MAGIC/H·E·S·S/VERITAS joint observations team as well as of the M87 team. I collaborate in the AGN physics working group of MAGIC and of the Cherenkov Telescope Array consortium For MAGIC I am acting as Telescope Operations and Safety Coordinator, and I am member of the MAGIC Time Allocation Committee and the MAGIC Speakers' Bureau. I am also coordinating the press relation activities of the CTA observatory work package. I am in charge of the scientific organization of the weekly institute's colloquium at Max-Planck-Institut für Physik.

The Location of the Particle Acceleration in Messier 87 Revealed:

An alliance of the world-leading gamma-ray instruments MAGIC, VERITAS, and HESS with a team of radio astronomers working with the Very-Long Baseline Array, enabled an unprecendented 120-hour observational campaign on the giant radio galaxy M87 in spring 2008. Two major outbursts of gamma-ray emission could be observed, while simultaneous high-resolution radio observations of the activity of this radio galaxy indicate a persistent increase of the radio flux from the innermost "core" of Messier 87, which is associated with the immediate vicinity of the central black hole. The combined observation pins down the location of activity during the gamma-ray outbursts and thus the site of the particle accelerator in M87. These results were published on July 24 in Science magazine.

When I heard the Learn'd Astronomer
Walt Whitman

WHEN I heard the learn'd astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and
        measure them; When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much
        applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.
