AWAKE is an R&D experiment to demonstrate effective electron acceleration in the plasma wakefield created by a high energy proton bunch. The experiment is located at CERN, and the postdoctoral researchers are expected to be based there. One researcher will have as focus the development of a new Rubidium-based plasma source for Run 2 of AWAKE. This will requirement involvement in the design, prototyping and commissioning of the new source. The source is expected to share many design con-cepts with the source used for Run 1. The second position will have as focus simulation studies of electron injection and acceleration in the plasma wakefield. State-of-the-art simulation codes will be used to study the evolution of the electron bunch during the acceleration process. It is expected that both researchers will be involved in the com-missioning, operation, and data analysis of Run 2 of AWAKE, which is scheduled to start in 2021.
Formal requirements for both positions are a PhD in physics. Experience in plasma wake-field experimentation is desirable but not mandatory. Experience in using relevant simulation codes is an advantage for the position involving simulations.
Salary and benefits are commensurate with the pay scale of public service organizations (TVöD). The contract is initially limited to 3 years with the possibility of an extension.
