Café & Kosmos on July 30, 2019: Black holes - remote and near

Café & Kosmos on July 30, 2019

Recently the Event Horizon Telescope published the first image of a black hole - or, to put it more precisey, of the center of the galaxy M87. Even if we cannot observe objects like this directly (actually the image shows the shadow of a black hole, surrounded by a ring of gas), astronomers are certain, that virtually every galaxy hosts such a gravity trap.

How researchers came to this insight, and what they meanwhile know about these exotic objects, will be explained by Prof. Thomas Boller form the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics.

When: July 30, 7 p.m.

Where: Ampere im Muffatwerk, Zellstr. 4, 81667 München
