The technology developed for the hadronic calorimeter in CALICE is currently being used to measure the beam background at the new SuperKEKB accelerator in Japan as well. The CLAWS detector was developed especially for this purpose. It is able to measure the particle background over longer periods of time with high temporal resolution.
This is in preparation for when the pixel detector of the Belle-II experiment goes operational. In February 2016, the CLAWS detector detected the first particles at the future interaction point of SuperKEKB – and thus provided direct confirmation of the successful first commissioning of this new accelerator.
